As a new mom struggling to make ends meet while in school and working 20-30 hours a week, government assistance programs helped keep my family afloat. For over 15 years, I have been living with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that ranges from mild to life threatening. I’ve always felt pressured to compromise my health in order to maintain health benefits and work. Passing a federal family and medical leave insurance bill that covers all workers will be a victory for everyone.
When when my younger daughter needed surgery at the same time that my elderly father needed immediate medical attention, having to take time off unpaid was an enormous financial burden for me. Establishing paid family leave is a necessary step to close the gender wage and stop punishing women financially for taking care of our families.
