Job Title: Director of Communications

Organization Overview:

For over five decades, 9to5 has been advancing economic justice for women, grounding our work through a racial and gender justice lens. As a grassroots, membership-based organization, our members have prioritized the issues we work on every day: low-wage jobs, the erosion of a social safety net, the lack of paid sick time and paid family leave, unemployment, and workplace discrimination.  Our programs include grassroots organizing, leadership development, and training, nonpartisan civic engagement, and policy change campaigns.  We are most active in Colorado, Georgia, and Wisconsin, but also have a national impact.

Position Overview:

The Director of Communications will play a critical role in shaping and amplifying the voice of 9to5 across various platforms. This individual will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy that supports the organization’s goals, enhances its visibility, and engages key stakeholders, including members, funders, media, and the general public. The Communications Director will oversee the creation of compelling content, manage media relations, and ensure consistent messaging across all channels.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Communications Planning:
    • Develop and execute a multi-faceted communications strategy to share 9to5’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities with members, funders, donors and supporters ; while weaving the narrative of our work across our state-based chapters.
    • Work closely with leadership and state-based teams to identify and prioritize key messages and communication opportunities.
    • Lead the development and implementation of campaign-specific communication plans to support organizing, advocacy, and fundraising efforts in conjunction with state-based communications staff.
  2. Content Creation and Management:
    • Oversee the production of high-quality content for various platforms, including websites, social media, newsletters, press releases, and reports to share with members, donors, funders and supporters.
    • Ensure all communications are culturally responsive, accessible, and reflect the diverse voices of 9to5 members and communities.
    • Oversee 9to5’s digital presence, including website content and social media channels, ensuring regular updates and audience engagement.
  3. Media Relations:
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key media outlets, reporters, and influencers to secure coverage of 9to5’s work.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for national media inquiries and prepare leadership and spokespeople for media interviews.
    • Develop and distribute press releases, op-eds, and other media materials to promote 9to5’s initiatives and respond to current events.
  4. Brand Management:
    • Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all communications, materials, and platforms.
    • Lead efforts to enhance 9to5’s brand recognition and visibility at the national level.
    • Oversee the creation and distribution of branded materials, including reports, fact sheets, and promotional items.
  5. Internal Communications/ Capacity Support:
    • Support internal communications efforts to keep staff informed and engaged with organizational updates and initiatives.
    • Provide support to state-based comms teams through capacity-building tools, regular meetings, and messaging support. 
  6. Collaboration and Leadership:
    • Collaborate with the Leadership Team, State Directors, and organizers when needed to ensure communication efforts are aligned with organizational goals.
    • Lead a communications team, including staff and consultants, and provide mentorship and professional development opportunities.
    • Work closely with VP Development to draft communications for development-related initiatives, and special events/projects.
    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and tactics, making adjustments as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a senior communications role, preferably in a nonprofit or advocacy setting.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic communications plans.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues in an accessible and compelling manner.
  • Strong media relations experience, with a track record of securing coverage in national and local outlets.
  • Proficiency in digital communications, including social media management, website content management systems (CMS), and email marketing platforms.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a deep understanding of racial, gender, and economic justice issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience in crisis communications.
  • Familiarity with graphic design and multimedia content creation.

Details:
