On my 18th birthday I had several plans—one being to complete an application to vote and obtain my voter ID card. To me, voting was an example of my political power; through this system I would have a voice and hopefully make a difference. The only hang-up I faced was that I had no idea where to start.

As a member of 9to5, I was honored to accompany Ms. Marilynn Winn, 9to5 Atlanta chapter organizer, to a meeting with Clayton Director of Personnel Ms. Renee Bright. I was happy to hear that Ms. Bright was at least open to the idea of removing the box on employment applications that ask about applicant’s arrest records.
With the goal of boosting civic participation and exercising Constitutional rights, grassroots groups throughout the country spent Tuesday meeting face-to-face with eligible people — and the public in general — to elevate awareness about “National Voter Registration Day.”
Seeing our coalition of community advocates fighting for the rights, dignity, and an end to discrimination against reformed citizens while promoting proven policies and best practices was powerful!
I had no idea what to expect at the 8/29 rally in solidarity with fast food strikers. Knowing they were on strike that day, not just in Atlanta, but in more than 50 states across the U.S. made me feel like I was a part of a bigger movement; a movement that is truly about making life more livable for millions of people in the United States.
