Hi Friend,

Yesterday two major events happened in Wisconsin – Governor Tony Evers addressed his proposed budget for the upcoming 2025-2027 state biennium and voters participated in the Spring Primary.

Governor’s Address

Last night, Governor Evers announced his budget plan for 2025-2027. We were glad to see that childcare and paid family and medical leave investments were prioritized. However, the investment in paid leave doesn’t cover every working Wisconsinite. Currently, the proposed budget recommends 8 weeks of paid leave to eligible state employees, university employees, and big companies. Although a start, it leaves out several hard working families who should not have to choose between caring for their health and their loved ones and their income.

Last year we introduced one of the most comprehensive paid family and medical leave bills in the nation and led a letter campaign urging several legislators to prioritize paid leave for all Wisconsinites in this budget. We will have an opportunity to speak our concerns during the upcoming Joint Finance Committee’s roadshow where residents across the state can share their concerns and feedback on the budget proposal.

9to5 Wisconsin will be gathering for our next online membership meeting on February 27th where we’ll dive deeper into the governor’s address and break down the budget process. We’ll also cover the next steps for taking action during the Joint Finance Committee’s roadshow. We will not stop fighting for the needs of working families in Wisconsin. RSVP here for the meeting link.

Spring Primary

Wisconsin voters chose who would advance to the spring election on April 1st, including the race for State Superintendent of Public Instruction as well as local races across the state.

The three candidates for State Superintendent of Public Instruction were Incumbent State Superintendent Jill Underly, education consultant Brittany Kinser, and Sauk Prairie Schools Superintendent Jeff Wright. Jill Underly and Brittany Kinser will advance to the spring election.

The spring election on April 1st will include another statewide race –  an open seat on the State Supreme Court. The two candidates running for this race are Dane County Circuit Court judge Susan Crawford and Waukesha County Circuit Court judge Brad Schimel. This race is important as those elected have authority over issues like voting rights and abortion laws in our state.

Important dates:
– Election day: April 1st
– Deadline to register to vote by mail and online: March 12th
– Deadline to request an absentee ballot: March 27 by 5pm
– In-Person absentee voting period: March 18 through March 30

In solidarity,

9to5 Wisconsin
