To our community, the survivors, and the families affected by the tragic shootings at Apalachee High School,

We are saddened and outraged by the senseless act of violence that occurred in Winder, Georgia. Our hearts go out to the survivors and community during this painful and traumatic time. We offer our deep condolences and grieve alongside those who are impacted.

At 9to5 Georgia, we strive for communities where our working families not only survive but thrive. To thrive we must be able to go to school, our workplaces, and public places without the fear of violence. This means supporting our younger generation who rely on our leadership to build a better future with them and the safety of public sector workers and educators in their workplaces. We all have the right to feel safe in our workplaces. We call for immediate action from our lawmakers to address the need for comprehensive and common-sense gun safety laws. Our future lies with our children, and we are all responsible for our community’s safety and well-being.

“As 9to5 Georgia’s Executive State Director and a member of my local school community, I know firsthand that change for the future starts in our schools,” said Jasmine Bowles, “Our youth deserve to go to school without fear of violence, without breaks for active shooter drills, and with excitement to learn. This type of violence is all too common and we must work together and elect leaders who will make the kinds of bold decisions necessary to curb violence in our communities.”

We have had enough of school and mass shootings that have begun to feel normal. We’ve had enough thoughts and prayers. We must act now to take measurable and bold action before any more innocent lives are lost through gun violence.
