It’s a story more common than we might think.

Jennette Wilfong, a Missouri 9to5 member, worked in a group home for adults with developmental disabilities. She worked 50-60 hours a week, and was on call 24/7 Monday to Friday, as well as some weekends and holidays.

“Sometimes if a staff member didn’t show, I’d have to pick up an overnight shift and then keep working my full shift the next day,” she said. “I was never compensated for any of those extra shifts or late-night emergencies.”

Jennette worked long, hard hours, but she never earned overtime for this work. This is where #FixOvertime comes in. Currently, our “overtime threshold” isn’t doing the job it was meant to because it hasn’t adapted along with inflation.

Last week the Obama administration announced crucial reforms to make 11 million more workers like Jennette eligible for overtime pay. Under the proposed rule change, starting in 2016 salaried workers who earn less than $970 per week (or $50,440 each year) would be guaranteed time-and-a-half pay when they work more than 40 hours a week.

That’s a huge win for workers everywhere! So, that’s why fixing our overtime threshold is so important. Everyone needs to know their work is valued, and the best way to tell them is to make sure employees get fair pay for their work.

Tell the Department of Labor that you think it’s time we fix the overtime threshold!
