(Washington, DC) –The U.S. Supreme Court’s 7-1 ruling in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin re- affirming the importance of diversity and equal opportunity in college admissions policies

9to5 National Executive Director Linda Meric released the following statement in response:

“Today’s Supreme Court’s decision is good news for building a more diverse and inclusive America. We are pleased that a majority of the Court came down in favor of equal opportunity in higher education. The decision reaffirms that it’s in our national interest to ensure that qualified students from diverse backgrounds, who work hard and succeed despite enormous difficulties, gain access to higher learning opportunities and a chance to achieve their full potential.

We believe that the University of Texas’s admissions policy is a carefully crafted one that will ultimately be upheld by the Court of Appeals. The University of Texas has created a fair process by removing barriers and opening up avenues to opportunity for students from a range of backgrounds. Within a group of qualified applicants, universities need to be able to consider a variety of factors in addition to test scores to create a diverse learning environment that prepares students for the real world.

9to5 and our allies remain committed to expanding holistic diversity programs that create more diverse classrooms, a better-prepared workforce and a thriving economy. Diversity benefits everyone and helps prepare tomorrow’s leaders for a global marketplace.”
