DENVER -- July 1, 2009 -- Today, Lorena Garcia assumes the position of Director of the Colorado Chapter of 9to5, National Association of Working Women in a planned organizational transition. Lorena has worked as an Organizer for 9to5 Colorado for almost two years, most recently as Lead Organizer. She has participated in a 14 month training and experiential program to prepare for the state Director position; 9to5 National Director Linda Meric served as Colorado Director during the transition.
Before coming to 9to5, Lorena worked in the non-profit sector for 10 years, working with at-risk Latino adults and youth. Lorena graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in film studies with an emphasis on cultural and religious studies. She has a passion for exposing injustices in the community through film, which she believes to be a highly effective medium for reaching large numbers of people and getting a message heard. Lorena’s passion is fighting for equality. Lorena is Latina, and is fluent in English and Spanish; she is a lesbian. She also serves on the boards of the Women’s Lobby of Colorado and the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR).
Since joining the 9to5 Colorado team, Lorena led the chapter’s successful 2008 Election Connection and equal opportunity field campaign, as well as our successful 2009 policy campaign to win workplace leave for parents to be involved in their children’s school activities.
In June, Lorena married Jennifer Stucka-Garcia in an outdoor ceremony in Littleton, Colorado.
We are all excited to welcome Lorena as 9to5 Colorado Director.
Congratulations, Lorena!
