STOP THE PAYDAY LOAN DEBT TRAP!

Mon, 02/01/2010 - 4:45pm
Support a 36% INTEREST RATE CAP ON PAYDAY LENDING!

Payday lending has been legal in Colorado since 2000, when the Colorado legislature passed a loophole that exempted them from having to charge reasonable interest rates. Payday loans are small loans that borrowers take out against their next paychecks. They have been widely condemned for their sky-high interest rates, which can be as much as 521%! Out of state payday lenders have flocked to Colorado in the last decade. They cluster along main streets and in low-income neighborhoods, preying on hard-working Coloradans and taking more than $80 MILLION in interest and fees out of our economy every year! This year, our state legislators will have the chance to level the playing field and require payday lenders to charge reasonable interest rates. You can take action today by calling your representative telling them to protect our communities from loan sharks! Click this button to visit the Coloradans for Payday Reform website:

Equal Pay for Equal Work

Thu, 01/28/2010 - 1:56pm
Paycheck Fairness Act

A much needed update of the 45-year-old Equal Pay Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act is a comprehensive bill that would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay, and strengthen federal outreach, education and enforcement efforts. The bill would also deter wage discrimination by strengthening penalties for equal pay violations and by prohibiting retaliation against workers who ask about employers' wage practices or disclose their own wages. This critical piece of legislation can help create a climate where pay discrimination is not tolerated, and give the courts the enforcement tools it needs to make real progress on pay equity.

Deadline for action: 11/25/2010.

Fri, 01/15/2010 - 4:44pm
Employee Free Choice Act

It would: * Remove current obstacles to employees who want collective bargaining. * Guarantee that workers who can choose collective bargaining are able to achieve a contract. * Allow employees to form unions by signing cards authorizing union representation.
