9to5 seeks an experienced Public Relations and Communications professional to coordinate external and internal communications using print journalism, broadcast media, social media, blogs and websites to reach the media, public, and 9to5 members with our messages. 9to5 is a grassroots membership organization, founded in 1973, which engages directly affected women to improve working conditions. Our goals are to build leadership among low-wage women and to win improvements in workplace and public policies. Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Direction and Supervision:  Overall – Lead updating and implementation of a communications plan and strategy for 9to5, working with the Executive Director and Management Team; Work with chapters and Action Network to increase visibility of the organization. External Media – Maintain and build relationships with national reporters to continue to position 9to5 as a leading expert on low-wage women’s issues; Write and pitch press statements and releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, PSAs, social media posts; Field all media calls, coordinate responses with Executive Director and Management Team; Plan and work with organizing staff to implement national days of action and other organization-wide press events to highlight 9to5’s programs and objectives; Monitor and track media coverage; Monitor the news, recent research, and work with Executive Director to evaluate messaging and create media opportunities; Represent 9to5 on national coalition media teams and calls. Internal Communications – Create national materials including newsletter, annual report, voter guide, member brochure, issue-oriented reports; Create national campaign materials including factsheets, collateral materials, talking points and messaging for staff and members; Work with organizing staff to manage member stories.

Organizational and Staff Development:  Train 9to5 members and staff with ongoing message and media training; Provide support to Online/Action Network organizer and direction to social media intern in online communications methods and strategies; Participate in annual membership drive and other organizational activities; Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
– At least three years experience with media, preferably national media.
– Excellent oral and written communications skills.
– Demonstrated experience writing and placing op-eds.
– Demonstrated experience and skills with social media, web writing, website development.
– Familiarity with issues facing low-wage women and grassroots organizing campaigns.
– Knowledge of Windows programs, including some graphics programs.
– Excellent organizational and strategic planning skills.- Ability to work independently, supervise, and train others.
– Demonstrated commitment to anti-oppression and ability to work with diverse populations.
– Must be able to work some evenings and weekend hours.

Details:

Start date: Goal of September 1, 2015. This position will remain open until we find the right candidate.

Half-time position, 20 hours/week. Based on full-time annual salary of $37,000. Position based in Atlanta, Denver or Milwaukee.
