9to5 California

9to5, California is comprised of the Bay Area chapter, organized in 1999, and the Los Angeles chapter, organized in 2006.  9to5 Sacramento was established in October 2011 in our state capital.

Our mission is to improve the workplace for women through grassroots organizing on issues that directly affect women and their families:   equal pay, equal opportunity to achieve economic independence, family-flexible jobs, and an end to discrimination and harassment.  We campaign with our allies to win paid sick days for all, good jobs with good benefits, and protection from wage theft.

The End of Welfare as I Knew It

I’ll always remember the day President Clinton signed Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), or welfare reform, into law. It was August 1996, and I was reading the morning paper in Barstow, California, completing the last leg of a cross-country road trip I’d taken with my daughter to celebrate my finishing school.
