In the Press: "Lynch Mob at Walmart Breakfast"

Dear Editor,

In a community organized meeting Saturday of the newly formed Milpitas Coalition for a Better Community primarily led by union steward Ron Lind, a panel of speakers presented their campaign against the proposed Walmart expansion, at the Sunnyhills United Methodist Church. They succeeded in demonizing Walmart for such preposterous claims like "jobs at Walmart keep women in poverty" (Cathy Deppe, 9to5 California Chapter of the National Association of Working Women, and "Moms Rising"), people being fired for getting sick, "They'll screw anybody," and the failure to pay prevailing wage (Nancy Mendizabal, announcing her candidacy for Milpitas City Council.) They proceeded to claim that Walmart was causing all the problems of Milpitas, including destroying the small-town character of our city.

In the Press: Trains are For Boys and Dolls are For Girls

The Xenia Institute, 12/28/2009 -

Editor's Note: This essay was written by 9to5 Los Angeles member, Caitlin Frazier for the Xenia Institute blog. The post-holiday period is a good time to ponder the gendering of toys/clothes for children.

For all intents and purposes, Christmas is over.  Whether you celebrate a cultural holiday (just one day),  a religious holiday (technically twelve days but rarely celebrated that way) or none at all, the thrill (or lack thereof) is past.  Gifts have been opened and exchanged.  Trees have come down.  Normal diets have been resumed.

Dear Editor,

Walmart in Milpitas should not be allowed to replace good local jobs that pay living wages and health benefits with more Walmart poverty-level jobs by expanding into a Supercenter.

In the Press: 9to5 Activist Janel Martinez and Son, Cody, Fight for Affordable Housing in San Jose

Mercury News, 11/11/2009 -

Janel Martinez, longtime activist and former board member of Bay Area 9to5 testified at San Jose City Council to save affordable housing programs in San Jose.

Hoping to avert what they believe will cause undue hardship for many, hundreds of San Jose residents packed City Hall's council chamber Tuesday night, pleading with officials not to permit the city's cash-strapped redevelopment agency to raid affordable housing funds.

One by one, they begged the council to reconsider the agency's proposal to borrow $40 million from housing to help balance its budget.

In the Press: Low-Income Single Moms Struggle to Survive in Recession with No Health Insurance

California Progress Report, 03/19/2009 -

In California, we are facing the worst recession in the past twenty-five years. Every week, 9to5 California Chapter of the National Association of Working Women receives calls at our offices in Los Angeles and San Jose from low-income mothers struggling to survive.

We hear stories about the plight of low-income mothers who work at jobs that lack health insurance and paid sick days. Many are afraid to go to the doctor because they can't afford to pay. Other low-income mothers go to work sick because they can't afford to stay home. And others are getting fired for just being sick.
