9to5 Atlanta

9to5’s Atlanta chapter was founded in 1983. Our mission is to improve the workplace for women and strengthen the ability of low-wage women in Georgia to win economic justice.

9to5 Atlanta also helps lead coalition efforts to win state legislative reform including: 1) the Parent Protection Act, which would to require all employers in Georgia to provide 24 hrs/year leave for parents to attend school-related activities of their children; or routine medical appointments for themselves or a family member; and 2) to raise the GA minimum wage, index it to keep up with inflation and cover groups of workers who are left out of the federal minimum wage law.

Pro & Con: Should the minimum wage be indexed for inflation?

via ajc.com

By Stephanie Coble Hankins

YES: Stop making this issue
a political football; be fair to workers.

On top of all the problems working families face in this bleak economy, add one more: For the first time in three years the federal minimum wage won’t go up this summer.

From 2007 through 2009, the nation’s lowest paid workers received long modest, long overdue increases in their paychecks each July. In 2007, Congress finally raised the federal minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour, phased in over three years.

We want to use our efforts to register new voters to both build our membership and raise awareness around issues important to low wage workers. We’ll have free food and refreshments for you to enjoy as you share your creative ideas concerning how we can make Georgia better.

Tipped Worker Profile: Brooklyn Cole

As a server supporting myself through school and as an artist for the past ten years, I know how hard it can be to live on tips alone. I have received an actual check from my employers only a handful of times. Usually, I receive a notice that says my base wage of $2.13 has gone to pay my taxes. As a server, I am reliant on tips, and those are vulnerable to the moods of customers and other circumstances outside my control.
