Everyone Deserves a Fair Chance

The risk of employment discrimination is a major obstacle for Colorado’s 1.5 million people with criminal records.  The vast majority want nothing more than to return to their community and secure a living wage job.  Yet because of stereotypes and stigmas, these members of our community are judged by their past, and not by their qualifications.  Fair Chance Hiring practices help to reverse discriminatory trends by ensuring employers follow the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s guidelines including removing the checkbox on applications, ensuring background checks are used fairly and making individualized assessments instead of blanket exclusions such as considering the age of the offense, and  its relevance to the job.

We strongly urge that Denver City Council, Mayor Hancock and Denver’s Business Community support Fair Chance Hiring practices.
