I am a single mother who was discriminated against because of my gender. I worked in a factory as the only woman in my department. I also had more seniority then all of the men I worked with and had trained many of them. So imagine my surprise when I learned that the men were making more than a dollar an hour more than what I was earning.
I am now an active member of 9to5 and support pay equity. As a mother and the sole breadwinner for my family, this pay gap made an enormous difference in my family’s ability to make ends meet. Pay equity is a working family issue – it affected my family. I support federal legislation such as the Paycheck Fairness Act and the Fair Pay Act because equal work deserves equal pay.
