9TO5 WISCONSIN

OUR CAMPAIGNS, ISSUES, AND VALUES
WHO ARE WE?

9to5 is one of the largest, most respected national membership organizations of working women in the U.S. We are dedicated to putting working women’s issues on the public agenda. 9to5’s mission is to build a movement for economic justice by engaging directly affected women to improve working conditions.

WHAT ARE OUR VALUES?

Winning family friendly policies to help working people balance responsibilities at home and on the job.
Ensuring workers receive fair pay and benefits
Protecting all workers against workplace discrimination and sexual harassment
Elevating women to be self- sufficient and able to support their families

WHAT ARE OUR CAMPAIGNS?

9to5 Wisconsin is currently advocating for policies that help working families across the state. We are working to win family leave insurance, ban the box, and social good ordinances (more info to the left). Get involved at www.9to5.org

BAN THE BOX

This campaign focuses on ending employment discrimination against the formerly incarcerated by removing the conviction history check box and other application questions regarding a person’s criminal background. 9to5 believes in equal opportunity for everyone and has led campaigns to ban the box in the cities of Milwaukee and Racine.

PAID FAMILY LEAVE

This campaign aims to create a statewide paid leave insurance program, allowing Wisconsin workers to take up to 12 weeks paid time off for personal illness, family illness, or the birth or adoption of a new child. 9to5 believes no one should have to choose between a paycheck and the health and well-being of their family.

SOCIAL GOOD

This campaign aims to encourage employers to adopt progressive workplace policies by giving extra points to companies bidding for a contract with the city if they have any of the following policies: ban the box, living wages, paid sick days, paid family leave, and breastfeeding accommodations.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Moms say, “Don’t make policy about us, without us!”

“You’d think they want us to fail,” said Marta, a young mother in a Boston parents’ meeting. She was rocking a sleeping toddler as she explained that she couldn’t cover her bills working just one job. So she added house cleaning on weekends, but the small pay increase led to her subsidized rent being doubled and she was now facing eviction. “How am I supposed to make this work?” she asked the other parents who were shaking their heads with an understanding that can only come from having gone through it. Over the next two hours, we kept coming back to that question and heard the same response. The women agreed, people who make policy “just don’t get it.”

I spoke on a panel with equal pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter, to discuss the state of women in the workplace.

Taking a Stand for Black Lives

Taking a Stand for Black Lives

Last week was difficult for many of us at 9to5 and our economic and racial justice allies. The tragic police killings of two more Black men in less than 48 hours filled us with sadness, anger and fear. As a grandmother, it hurt my heart to see a four year old girl witness the murder of her mother’s boyfriend from the back seat of their car.
