ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A national movement to end employment discrimination against the formerly incarcerated is underway in Albany.
A community wide meeting was held Thursday night at Albany Tech to discuss the Ban the Box initiative.
It seeks to ease hiring barriers for those with a record by removing the arrest/conviction box from job applications, creating a better chance for employment.
“My plan is to build a coalition of counties with the largest amount of formerly incarcerated individuals returning home to those cities from prison,” said Lead Organizer Marilyn Winn of 9-5 Atlanta. “It would be a revolving door if these people are not able to get jobs.”
The policy change could expand access to jobs for some of the 476 people returning from prison to Albany and Dougherty County.
