9to5 is Hiring!  Assistant Director of Communications

9to5 seeks an experienced communications professional who will be responsible for the integrated communication and promotion of the brand and work of 9to5.  Reporting to the National Executive Director, they will be responsible for implementing a content strategy for 9to5, and for producing high-quality communications products that amplify 9to5’s position as one of the largest, most respected women’s economic justice organizations in the country.

Primary Responsibilities: Working directly with the National Executive Director, the Assistant Director of Communications will help develop an overall communications strategy that meets objectives for fundraising, member and staff recruitment, and new donor development.   They will lead in the implementation of our communications strategy, providing direction and structure for staff, and building an organizational awareness and culture around communications.  The Assistant Director of Communications will stay up to date on the latest communications practices, consult with chapter directors and senior management, train and support 9to5 staff as needed.

Specific Communications Responsibilities Include:

  • Regularly collaborate with the National Executive Director on communications initiatives
  • Create engaging content for diverse channels including email / newsletter, websites, social media, blogs, video, multimedia campaigns, speeches, correspondence, and presentations
  • Manage 9to5’s social media channels, including the development of original content, curating content, engaging target audiences, evaluating impact, and support communications staff dispersed throughout our state offices
  • Identify and engage with other professionals (videographers, photographers, artists, PR and marketing professionals) to enhance and support our goals
  • Assist with media relations, including conducting research and developing talking points for executive leadership
  • Support the development of pitches and place stories and op-eds in high-value media outlets
  • Identify engagement opportunities with target audiences and opportunities for increasing awareness of 9to5 and our work including guest blogs, op-eds, public appearances and speeches, contributed articles, white papers, videos, etc.
  • Maintain and build out distribution lists for 9to5 communications products
  • Analyze the efficacy of different messages, tracking metrics and avenues of distribution
  • Help create and support internal processes to ensure the timely dissemination of content, message alignment across state chapters, and staff accountability
  • Support state chapter Directors and staff in crafting effective messaging and developing collateral for key campaigns and initiatives as needed
  • Consult on the creation of other 9to5 publications and collateral to include fundraising campaigns, special research reports, brochures, policy briefs and other pieces as directed
  • Represent 9to5 at conferences and exhibitions

Qualifications: – A minimum of 5 years of communications experience in the development of marketing and informational materials, public relations / media relations, writing and research, project management and /or information technology- A bachelor’s degree preferred in communications, public relations, marketing, art, journalism or other related field- Demonstrated creativity in the design of marketing, public relations or educational programs and communications materials- Excellent oral and written communications skills, with a demonstrable ability to communicate complex ideas into succinct and clear ways to a variety of internal and external stakeholders- Excellent organizational and strategic planning skills- Ability to manage deadlines, work with staff, and achieve outcomes in a multi-office, consensus-driven work culture – Knowledge of publishing and other related software- Demonstrated commitment to anti-oppression and ability to work with diverse populations

– Must be able to flex work hours at times, as needed, for crisis communications or events

– Ability to travel 10-15% to visit state chapters or attend conferences, as needed
